The perfect fit for this doctorate program has:
- A solid background in materials science and engineering.
- A vocation and interest in scientific research in any of the fields of materials science or engineering.
- Masters-level knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, and physics.
- Commitment to a solid academic improvement, by dedicating full time to their studies to complete this program within the term established in the program plan.
- A certificate of master's studies, which certifies having completed 100% of the credits, and a minimum general average of 8.0 (eight zero), without exception.
- Excellent reading and comprehension of texts in the English language. For non-English speaking applicants, this should be demonstrated by a certificate issued by the National School of Languages, Linguistics, and Translation of the UNAM (ENALLT-UNAM) or an equivalent official external institution (460 points in TOEFL PBT or level B1 of the CEFR).
Duration
The work plan to be developed in the program will be carried out in a maximum period of eight semesters, until the degree is obtained and will cover the number of academic activities that are established every semester between the student and his tutor or main tutors, with the endorsement of the tutoring committee.
Students who have met all the permanence requirements will be able to take the doctoral degree exam before the eighth semester.

Admission requirements
Applicants graduated from other master's degrees will be subject to the following admission process:
a) Pass the admission exam that consists of:
- A written exam of prior knowledge based on the syllabi of the preparation courses.
- A psycho-pedagogical test (skills and abilities).
- An interview with the admissions and scholarships subcommittee.
b) To pass the English language exam, at the level of reading and comprehension of texts, by means of a certificate issued by the National School of Languages, Linguistics and Translation of the UNAM (ENALLT-UNAM) or by an equivalent official external institution (460 points in TOEFL PBT or level B1 of the CEFR).
c) Applicants from non-Spanish speaking countries must demonstrate full command of this language by means of a certificate of sufficiency from the CEPE or another that in the opinion of the Academic Committee be sufficient.
Applicants who pass the admission process will enter the doctorate and will be assigned an initial primary tutor during the first semester.
The prior knowledge exam of the general admission exam is based on the syllabi of the courses.

Requirements for permanence, graduation, and obtaining a degree
Requirements for permanence in the program
- Students are expected to dedicate full time to their graduate studies.
- Complete the academic activities within the term established in the program plan.
- Every semester, students must present a report of their academic activities to their tutoring committee.
- To register for the seventh semester, it is necessary to submit the proof that certifies proficiency in the English language, equivalent to or higher than level B2 of the CEFR for Languages, or TOEFL PBT with a minimum of 500 points issued by the National School of Languages, Linguistics, and Translation (ENALLT-UNAM), other UNAM language centers, or other international organizations with which UNAM has academic collaboration agreements for this purpose.
- Students must obtain favorable semester evaluations from their tutor committees.
- Obtain the nomination for the doctoral degree within the deadlines established in the study plan and operating regulations.
- Finalizar el plan de trabajo en el tiempo establecido en el plan de estudios.
Requirements for nomination for the degree
When students are evaluated by the Academic Committee they are nominated for a doctorate degree when they show a solid academic background and capacity for research.
When the evaluation is negative, the Academic Committee may grant a second and final evaluation, which must be carried out within one year.
PhD Graduate Requirements
- Have covered all the academic activities, 100% of the credits, and the requirements set forth in the Ph.D. curriculum and the work plan established with their tutor or main tutors, endorsed by the tutoring committee.
- Have been nominated for the degree.
- Have completed the complementary academic activities.
- Have a certification of proficiency in the English language, equivalent to or higher than level B2 of the CEFR for Languages, or TOEFL PBT with a minimum of 500 points issued by the National School of Languages, Linguistics, and Translation (ENALLT-UNAM), other UNAM language centers, or other international organizations with which UNAM has academic collaboration agreements for this purpose.
- Have a peer-reviewed research paper published or accepted for publication.
- Have the doctoral thesis accepted by their examination jury.
Requirements for obtaining the degree
To take the doctoral degree exam, the students must:
- Have covered all of the Ph.D. graduate requirements.
- Take and pass the degree examination, which will consist of the oral defense of the doctoral thesis before a jury appointed by the Academic Committee.

- Application letter addressed to the Program Coordinator, stating the reasons why the applicant wishes to enter the Doctoral Degree in Materials Science and Engineering (signed by the applicant).
- Master's degree title or copy of the master's examination certificate on both sides, signed by the applicant and with the seal of the General Directorate of Professions. UNAM graduates will only deliver a copy of the aforementioned document.
- A certificate of master's studies, which certifies having completed 100% of the credits, and a minimum general average of 8.0 (eight zero), without exception.
- Birth certificate.
- Resumé (without supporting attachments).
- CURP.
- Registration form obtained by filling out the questionnaire for applicants on the page www.pceim.unam.mx, after having accepted the terms of this call.
- For foreigners, proof of fluency in the Spanish language.

For UNAM graduates:
- Copy on both sides of the Professional title.
- Copy of the Master's degree title on both sides.
For students who graduated from other higher education institutions::
- Copy on both sides of the Professional and Master's degree titles (and bring the original to compare).
- A certificate of master's studies, clearly stating the applicant has completed 100% of the credits, and a minimum general average of 8.0 (eight zero).
For foreign students:
All documents apostilled.
- Original and copy of the Professional title.
- Original and copy of the Master's degree title.
- Birth certificate.
- Certified copy of the Immigration Form.
- Proof of equivalence of the minimum average established in the undergraduate studies, issued by the General Directorate of Incorporation and Revalidation of Studies of the UNAM.
- Equivalence of studies issued by the DGIRE, UNAM.

Graduate scholarships
The Doctorate program in Materials Science and Engineering belongs to the National Register of Quality Graduate Programs of CONACYT, so it is possible to obtain a scholarship from this institution, or through the UNAM, through the Coordination of Graduate studies.
Eligibility of applicants for the CONACYT National Scholarship
Candidates are students accepted in conventional face-to-face Ph.D. programs that are registered in the National Register of Quality Graduate Programs of CONACYT, who formally express their commitment to full-time dedication and who maintain academic or performance quality in accordance with the criteria established in the Assignment Agreement and the CONACYT Scholarship Regulations.
